How to save money on fuel

Fuel prices are rocketing up, from below $2 a litre to $3 a litre. It’s a big hit to the weekly budget and something that’s difficult to cut back on. There are 2 ways to save money on fuel. First, use our fuel app for all types of fuel. Second, fill up at the bottom of the petrol price cycle.

Who doesn’t want the cheapest fuel prices?

Fuel is an everyday necessity for many people. Most drivers fill up once a week or once a fortnight (both 35%) so every dollar counts. Over half (56%) value cheaper prices over location of a servo

The ACCC follows petrol price movements closely. It says there are 2 ways to save:

  1. Use a fuel price app.
  2. Take advantage of movements in petrol price cycles.

Use a fuel price app

Fuel price apps are a practical way to save money on fuel.

Use our fuel price calculator to instantly see the latest, lowest prices for any service stations you select. It updates prices for every station in NSW, every 20 minutes. You can favourite the same few close to work/home or check fuel prices before a trip. It’s simple to use:

  1. Select fuel types.
  2. Enter suburb or postcode or use your current location.
  3. Choose your favourite service stations.
  4. Set up regular notifications or just click on your favourites to see them all at once.

About 2 in 5 people are using fuel price apps:

  • 46% of women and 36% of men
  • 55% of 18-24s
  • 31% of people earning under $70,000 but 50% of those earning over $200,000.

Buy at the bottom of the petrol price cycle

Big price changes are often the result of petrol price cycles in the cities and some regions. In one 6.5 week cycle, petrol prices increase sharply, then decrease more gradually over a few weeks.

When petrol prices increase, not all stations increase them at the same time. The best way to save money is to look for servos with the slowest increase and the fastest decrease in petrol prices during each cycle.

It makes sense to check prices:

  • 9% of stations increase prices by a massive 45 cents or more per litre.
  • 65% of service stations regularly increase prices by 30-45 cents per litre.
  • 18% increase prices by 15-30 cents per litre.

During 2023, a Sydney motorist who followed price cycles and used fuel apps or sites to find the cheapest fuel at other times would have saved $407. With burgeoning fuel prices in early 2026, they could save even more by comparing first.

Note: There are no price cycles for diesel.

Save money on buying fuel now.
