The cost of tolls is a big expense for Sydney drivers. If you live in Western Sydney or in the Blue Mountains, you’ve been disproportionately hit with rising tolls. Fortunately, $60 caps, 40% rebates, M5 Cashback and multi-concessions will help you save money on tolls.
Toll relief cap
If you spend $60 to $400 a week on tolls, you can claim a rebate of up to $340 each quarter. These must be personal trips in a vehicle registered for private use.
You can also claim the toll relief rebate.
Toll relief rebate
If you spent more than $402 on tolls from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, you can claim a 40% rebate.
- Motorists can claim up to $802.
- Sole traders can claim up to $1,605.
- All claims for toll relief close 30 June 2025.
You can also claim the $60 weekly cap. Note, the toll rebate can’t be used with M5 Southwest Cashback.
M5 Southwest Cashback
The M5 Southwest Cashback is for drivers making personal trips who have paid M5 Southwest tolls. Register with your toll tag provider and make claims once a quarter within 12 months of receiving your toll statement.
Multi-concession tolling scheme
Trips on WestConnex are capped after 16 kms of continuous travel. Your trip is handled as a single toll transaction, no matter how many WestConnex motorways you use. As at April 2025, the WestConnex toll is capped at $12.25.
Large towed vehicle toll rebate
If you own a caravan, boat or horse float and have paid Class B tolls, you can claim the large towed vehicle rebate. The rebate is the difference between Class A and Class B toll fees for up to 8 tolled trips each month.
Make sure to register for the scheme through your toll tag provider and claim within 12 months of receiving your toll statement.
This rebate doesn’t apply to motorhomes.
Toll increases far outpace inflation
For 8 years, greenslips.com.au has been calculating the cost of 5 trips in Sydney. The average increase in toll charges for 3 of those trips is now 32%. For trips involving the M5 East, charges have doubled or more.
These toll increases far outpace inflation. However, motorists making these trips may qualify for more than one type of toll relief.
