Fines are a shock
The fines for driving an unregistered vehicle are hefty: $673 for being unregistered and $673 for being uninsured. If rego is more than 3 months overdue, it can cost more than $1,700. This is because you need a blue slip and new number plates as well.
Worse, you are driving uninsured, and could be up for thousands in compensation for someone injured by your vehicle.
According to the Sun Herald, thousands of drivers have no idea they are driving unregistered until police stop them.
The RMS says it sends reminders to drivers with an online account. If they do not have an email address, it sends a letter 2 weeks after rego was due. Not everyone remembers to change their address when they move, also an offence.
Drivers with a Service NSW account can get notifications – but only if they turn them on.
