Green slips for L and P platers

young volunteers L and P platers

Are you on Learner or Provisional 1 or 2 plates and need a green slip? A green slip is compulsory third party insurance to cover people who may be seriously hurt or killed in an accident involving your car. Green slips can be expensive for novice drivers but there are ways to keep prices down.

What is a green slip?

A green slip is compulsory third party (CTP) insurance to cover you in case someone is seriously hurt or killed in an accident involving your car.

  • If you’re an L or P plater with your own car, you can use your own details to get greenslip prices.
  • If you’re sharing the family car, parents will use their details and yours to get a green slip.

Research has found P-platers who share their parents’ car tend to drive more safely and communicate more about where they are going.

Do parents pay more for L or P platers?

Parents who allow their L or P platers to use the family car will pay more for its green slip. The extra cost for having an L or P plater on the policy is $193 to $305, depending on where you live.

We show the price of a green slip for L or P platers who use the family car, a 10-year-old Toyota Corolla. You can also see the price of a green slip for the same car without any L or P platers.

Location Price with

Price without

Extra paid
Metro $724 $417-$550 up to $305
Outer metro $520 $318-$405 up to $202
Newcastle/Central Coast $481 $288-$371 up to $193
Wollongong $576 $340-$442 up to $236
Country $510 $299-$389 up to $211

* Prices for L and P platers are nearly identical, so no range is given.

Do parents have to say there is a learner?

Yes, parents do have to declare a Learner, Provisional or any other driver of their vehicle. If there is an accident, insurers are required to provide green slip cover even if the driver was not declared. However, insurers are entitled to ask for the premium that should have been paid and charge a penalty if the vehicle owner knowingly gave false information.

How many demerit points has the owner/drivers lost on their licence?

The question about demerit points applies to owners, learners and P platers. However, learners and P platers can accrue fewer demerit points than full licence holders before they lose their licences:

  Learner P1 P2
Maximum demerits 4 in 3 years 4 in 3 years 7 in 3 years

How can I reduce my green slip premiums?

While you can’t help being young or inexperienced, it helps a lot to drive a newer, safer vehicle. The main factors insurers use to set greenslip prices are:

  • Where you live (metro, outer metro, Newcastle and Central Coast, Wollongong, country)
  • Type and age of vehicle
  • Age and gender of vehicle owner and youngest driver
  • Driving history (offences, demerit points, years licensed)
  • Claims history (other insurance held, at-fault claims).

As you progress from Ls to P1s to P2s to a full licence, you can increasingly control what you drive, how you drive, and where you drive. You can also make sure you have a clean driving history with no offences, loss of points, or insurance claims.
