Renew your NSW drivers/riders licence online

The simplest way is to renew your NSW drivers/riders licence online.

To renew your licence online, your licence must have expired no more than 6 months ago, or will expire in 6 months or less. You must also:

  • Meet the eyesight requirements, eg, drivers/riders 45 or over must take an eyesight test every 5 years
  • Be aged 17 or over
  • Have all up to date medical conditions on record
  • Hold an unrestricted licence (not cancelled, disqualified, suspended or refused).

Finally, you must have provided your signature and had your photo taken within 10.5 years before your new drivers/riders licence will expire.

Renew your NSW drivers or riders licence in person

Not everyone is permitted to renew their NSW licences online. You need to renew your drivers/riders licence in person at Service NSW if you:

  • Want to renew your licence for 10 years
  • Are a learner driver
  • Are required to prove your fitness to drive
  • Hold a combined driver/rider and boat licence
  • Have changed addresses within the last 14 days.

If you have to renew your licence in person, take a completed NSW licence renewal form, current licence or other form of ID and licence fee to Service NSW. You may have to show other types of relevant proof, such as a change of address or fitness to drive documents.

Service NSW provides a paper receipt to act as proof of your licence status until you receive your new drivers/riders licence.

Who can renew a drivers/riders licence for 10 years?

The 10-year option is not available to everyone. You need to be aged 21-44, because this is the period when people’s faces change the least. After age 44, it is easier to misidentify someone from a photograph that is not recent.

Other requirements are to hold car or motorbike licence and not be a commercial driver, such as a taxi or rideshare driver.

If you are eligible for a concession, you can renew your NSW drivers/riders licence for 5 or 10 years.

The cost of your drivers/riders licence

NSW full drivers/riders licence renewal fees as at June 2024 are:

  • $66 for 1 year
  • $154 for 3 years
  • $208 for 5 years
  • $386 for 10 years.

The Fair Go for Safe Drivers and Riders discount has not applied since 17 February 2024.

How to renew your drivers/riders licence outside NSW

Some drivers/riders may be temporarily interstate or in another country when their NSW licence renewal is due. In this case, they can use the photo licence kit.

There is one form for interstate and one form for overseas drivers and riders.

You can ask for a photo licence kit unit to be posted. Your new licence will be posted to the address you provide, whether it is interstate, overseas or in NSW.

Note, a photo licence renewal can be used only once. This means any subsequent NSW drivers/riders licence renewals must be in NSW.
