Why does fuel cost so much?

The price of fuel is based on a complex variety of factors. It’s tempting to blame high prices on one single factor, such as public holidays, country versus city, or motorway versus suburban prices. In fact, the opposite is just as likely to be true and these are only very small contributors.

ACAPMA explains the average breakdown of fuel prices:

  • 85% is the cost of the product only.
    • Half is the wholesale price (based on oil prices, exchange rate, production, transport).
    • Half is government taxes.
  • 15% is transport to the service station, retail cost, wages, profit (roughly 2-2.2 cents per litre).

Whatever are the current reasons for high or low prices, it always makes sense to compare fuel prices. We compare every servo, every fuel type, guaranteed.
