1. Vehicle type

Perhaps the trickiest question is Vehicle type. You have to choose between Motor car or Ute/Light goods vehicle. Some SUVs and 4WDs are classified as Motor cars and some as Light goods vehicles. Always check the shape code on your registration notice.

  • Motor car includes passenger vehicles, sedans, station wagons and some SUVs.

Shape codes are CON, COU, FCV, HRS, PVF, SBS, SED, SNO, TWC, WAG.

  • Ute/Light goods vehicle includes utes, table tops, panel vans and some SUVs.

Shape codes are PVS, PVW, PVN, TT, TTF, UTE, VAN.

2. Registration commencement date

The greenslips.com.au Calculator uses prices on your Registration commencement date. This is the day your green slip and registration begin.

  • Some insurers may ask for registration due date – the last day your registration and green slip payment is due.
  • Some may ask for expiry date –  up to midnight on the day both green slip and registration expire.

3. Year, Make And Model

The easiest way to find your vehicle Year, Make and Model is to check your Registration renewal notice.

  • Typing in the first letter of the vehicle Make and Model speeds up your search.
  • If you can’t find your Make or Model, check Vehicle type to see whether you should have used Motor car or Ute/Light goods vehicle instead.
  • Make and Model don’t work for vehicles older than 1991.

4. The exact Vehicle model variant

Green slip prices can vary a lot based on the Vehicle model variant.

  • Check your Vehicle model variant on your greenslip renewal or Registration renewal notice.
  • Also use what you know about your vehicle, for example, 4WD or dual cab
  • If you don’t select the right Vehicle model variant, the price will not be accurate.

5. Youngest driver’s age

Many people think if they’re the only driver, there is no Youngest driver. However, this simply means the age of the youngest driver is your age.

Use the age of the owner or youngest driver on the date the green slip commences.

6. Other insurance for your vehicle

Green slip prices also depend on whether or not you have other insurance on your vehicle.

  • Other insurance includes comprehensive insurance or third party property insurance.
  • Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your vehicle and other vehicles and includes fire and theft.
  • Third party property insurance covers damage to other vehicles only.

7. Demerit points

Demerit points are one signal to the insurer whether or not you drive safely and within the law. You have to answer the question about demerit points to receive an accurate price. Insurers may ask for your consent to check them. Check your demerit points here.

8. Driving convictions

A Driving conviction is one that involves a court appearance. It doesn’t include parking fines, low range speeding fines or other minor offences.

9. Be accurate!

Prices in the greenslips.com.au Calculator depend entirely on the accuracy of all the information you enter.

Take particular care with:

  • Vehicle type
  • Vehicle model variant
  • Number of demerit points
  • Youngest driver’s age.
