Green slips provide exactly the same coverage for drivers of all ages. However, drivers over 70 may face rising prices for their green slips. You can use the greenslips.com.au Calculator to make sure you get the best price for your long-term driving experience.
If you need a green slip for a light vehicle and are over 70, you can compare prices using the greenslips.com.au Calculator. Prices for older drivers are particularly affected by your age, age of the youngest driver, claims history and any existing relationships with an insurer.
Rising costs of green slips for over 70s
We used the greenslips.com.au Calculator for an example owner of a 10-year-old, insured station wagon, no traffic offences or demerit points, with long-term NRMA membership:
Age | Price from | Average price | Average increase |
65 | $414 | $556 | |
70 | $414 | $556 | +0% |
75 | $415 | $568 | +2.2% |
80 | $468 | $586 | +3.2% |
85 | $470 | $626 | +6.8% |
In this example, owners aged 65 or 70 pay the same for their green slip. Prices generally rise from age 75 and owners aged 85 pay an average 6.8% more than those 5 years younger. However, two insurers charged the same in this example, regardless of age.
The age of the youngest driver also makes a difference to the final price. If you are 65-70 and the youngest driver is 55, it doesn’t change the green slip price. If you are 85 and the youngest driver is 60, a green slip costs on average $565 instead of $626.
Rewards for long-term loyalty to an insurer
As an experienced driver over 70, you may be loyal to one insurer. Only one insurer, NRMA Insurance, asks about the length of relationship to calculate its green slip. However, GIO and NRMA offer discounts on other types of insurance if you also hold their green slip:
- GIO offers 10% multi-policy discounts if you have 3 or more policies, a 10% discount off comprehensive insurance if you buy online, and $50 off comprehensive insurance if you hold a GIO green slip. See more.
- NRMA Insurance offers Loyalty Discounts from 5% to 12.5% on other types of insurance if you hold its greenslip. You can calculate your Loyalty Discount.
Loyalty to an insurer is one way, other than price, of deciding whose green slip to buy.
History of making claims
Recent claims history is one of the risk factors included in the price of all green slips. With plenty of driving experience, you may be less likely to have accidents and make claims. However, making even minor claims could affect the price of your green slip if you were the at-fault driver in an accident.
Green slips for drivers over 70 on aged pension
The pension age in Australia is 65-67, depending on when you were born. However, drawing an aged pension does not affect the price of your green slip. Insurers use many factors to set green slip prices but having a pension is not one of them. Note, NSW registration of one vehicle is free for a pensioner and Service NSW can automatically renew their registration.
