Your green slip covers lifetime injuries

Some people are injured so badly in a road accident they need treatment and care for the rest of their lives. Your green slip covers lifetime injuries through the Lifetime Care and Support scheme. This is why you pay the Fund Levy with your green slip.

People with lifetime injuries

Your greenslip covers you for people who are injured or who die in a road accident involving your vehicle. However, the Fund Levy part of your greenslip pays for those who need care for the rest of their lives under the Lifetime Care and Support scheme. This scheme provides separate benefits for people who have suffered catastrophic injuries in a road accident, such as spinal cord or brain injuries.

The entitlement to receive lifetime support after catastrophic injuries in a road accident does not depend in any way on fault.

At June 2023, there were 1,792 people receiving lifetime care in NSW. In the previous year, iCare had paid $236.7 million to people needing lifetime support.

The State Insurance Regulatory Authority says 761 people had applied to their greenslip insurer for lifetime support, as at 31 March 2024.

Who is receiving lifetime support?

The people most likely to need lifetime support after a road accident are male car drivers who suffer a traumatic brain injury.

According to iCare figures, 1,304 (73%) are men and 488 (27%) are women.

Recipients of lifetime support are most likely to be car drivers, then motorcyclists and third, pedestrians. It’s sobering to think pedestrians were not even in a motor vehicle when they were catastrophically injured and their risk is close to that of a motorcyclist:

  • 530 drivers                   (30%)
  • 420 motorcyclists       (23%)
  • 388 pedestrians          (22%)
  • 347 passengers          (19%)
  • 77 cyclists                     (4%)

The most common injury is traumatic brain injury (75%), followed by spinal cord injury (22%).

While most people receiving support for lifetime injuries are from NSW, 151 are from other states and territories and 49 from overseas.

All green slip prices include the Fund Levy

While only a few people need lifetime care and support, nobody knows whether they will one day be that person. This is why the price of your green slip always includes the Fund Levy.
